sweep-edit1

went through 5597 images from the "year in the life of the hospital school" project.
got it down to 557 and would aim for 50 or 60 - it's going to be tough leaving stuff out.

i'm going to spend time on the text(s) as that might just focus the final edit(s)

I've been enjoying posting the (odd) photo in a flickr commenting group http://bit.ly/nrYVDE despite it's name

"Top Pics (Accept or Reject)- A W@nker-Free Zone" it's actually quite enjoyable, very low traffic and I enjoy commenting on other's photos as much if not more than getting comments myself

iron railings by mdx

dropped my camera :(

camera fell off the tripod today - 3ft onto a vinyl floor - felt sick - it bent the metal lens cover and the edge of the battery compartment - so far all working OK but just have to check the focus and keep an eye on it - and not drop it again!

family and the familiar

the theme for this years west photo prize is "family and the familiar" -

"The concept of family is constantly changing, with every person forming their own definition. Being familiar gives us confidence and security and is a guarantor for a multi-cultural society. As we learn to negotiate changes and new experiences in our lives the unfamiliar becomes familiar. Through photography we can visualise these changes."

something for the summer -

Evidence

Spent a good while goofing around in the playground with H - he's full of invention creating scenarios for us to explore.
Took a load of iPhone photos of stuff on the ground and played with putting them in a slideshow.
Need to get faster working with Final Cut Express.
I shall go back and reshoot properly - got a Tarkovsky style notion going on,

Got a photograph in Aubade magazine

Biscuit man makes an appearance in this month's issue of Aubade.
I like the way Chris has included some chemistry too.

farewell 365

farewell 365 by mdx
Recently taking a photo a day and posting it to flickr 365 groups has begun to feel not only a chore but also pointless. Maybe because the focus with the flickr posting can seem an obsession to just read what comments people have added. And to add comments myself. And being part of some Flickr community. It's OK but can start to feel like a weak substitute for existing in the "real" world.
A distraction from the actual thing of of documenting one's life day by day.
How about take a photo a day for a year and don't show anyone till the year's up.

watched the documentary Press Pause Play on the ups and downs of the democratizing power of the Internet

"the craft is gone"
"the craft is no longer necessary"
"technology always comes first - the artist comes after and abuses it and changes it"

"When you leave everything to the crowd, where everything is democratised, when everything is determined by the number of clicks, you are by definition undermining the seriousness of the artistic endeavour," - "There is no evidence that we are on the verge of a great new glittering cultural age, there is evidence that we may well be on the verge of a new dark age in cultural terms … where the creative world is destroyed and where all we have is cacophony and self opinion, where we have a crisis of democratised culture."Andrew Keen

Albert Bridge on the Thames

Albert Bridge on the Thames by mdxShoot with the Hipstamatic app on the iPhone. Instant transcendence. Been feeling seriously gloomy about photography and the weight of taking photographs every day. Got a Yashica Mat in the post and although I remind myself that it's not about the equipment I'm interested in the different physicality of a waist level viewfinder.

bakelite doorknob

bakelite doorknob by mdxtaking endless photographs feels like a pointless thing at the moment - aren't there enough images in the world already?
at times like this a picture of a bakelite door knob seems like the most useful photo I can make.
